The prayer service, which was interdenominational, was a clear demonstration of how the University values diversity and inclusivity. The Muslims, Hindus, Seventh Day Adventists, Protestants and Catholics were all represented. Recitations were made, prayers said and songs were sung by various student choirs.

Mwalimu Nyerere African Union scholarship scheme aims to support young women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to pursue Masters and PhD programmes in reputable African universities .


 An applicant must:

  1. Be a Female Citizen of an African Union Member State
  2. Be under the age of thirty five (35) years for Masters Programmes; and under forty (40) years for PhD Programmes.
  3. Be a holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in the relevant field, at the level of Upper Second Class Honours for a Masters’ Programme; and a holder of Masters’ Degree in the relevant field for a PhD Programme. The degree must be from a reputable University
  4. Have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement as evidenced by academic transcripts, and academic awards if any.
  5. Have proof of admission to undertake a full time Masters or PhD programme in a recognized university of an African Union Member State.
  6. Be willing to commit to work in an African Union Member State on completion of studies for at least three (3) years. 

The scholarship covers tuition fees and a monthly stipend of USD500.

You do not write proposals to get money, you write proposals to further an idea or to solve a problem for which you need money – Prof. Madara Ogot, Director, Research and Extension

The second session of the Grant Proposal Writing workshop kicked off yesterday with the Director for Research and Extension, Professor Madara Ogot challenging the participants to apply for the 2nd National Research Fund (NRF) Call for multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional grants.

Having written and won numerous grants, Prof. Ogot  who is also the workshop facilitator, challenged the participants to develop proposals that further an idea or solve a problem then cost what would be required to develop the good idea. In this regard, the proposals should be important and relevant. In addition, the proposal should appeal to a particular audience, who is the funder.
